Watch: Milan denied free-kick before Pisa’s goal despite blatant foul on Gabbia

AC Milan were denied a free-kick by VAR after Pisa’s second goal last night, despite what was a pretty blatant foul on Matteo Gabbia.

After taking the lead through Rafael Leao, Milan conceded twice against Pisa to go behind, first through a penalty by Juan Cuadrado and then an out-of-nowhere goal by M’Bala Nzola. However, the away side’s second goal perhaps should have been disallowed.

Looking at the replays, it’s clear that Gabbia was on the receiving end of a pretty blatant foul, as the Pisa attacker ran straight into him and brought him to the ground. VAR did have a look afterwards, but it’s unclear if the foul was looked at or only the potential offside.

In any case, whether the foul was looked at or not by VAR, it’s very strange that the referee wasn’t called to the monitor to have a look. Gabbia stood up pretty quickly afterwards, but perhaps he would have benefited from staying on the ground to really highlight the foul.

Massimiliano Allegri was actually asked about the foul in his post-match interview, but instead of pointing out the referee’s error, he simply said that Milan failed in other aspects in that sequence. In short, they shouldn’t have found themselves in that situation to begin with.

  1. And the other 2 defenders that were supposed to do something were spectating. Mistake by the referee probably and by Pavlovic + Athekame.

  2. that’s one way to distract otherwise a solid defense. allegri was right to say the situation shouldn’t happened to begin with and the team should have been more clinical with their finishing.

  3. It was a clear foul but did it actually impact the play?
It doesn’t look like Gabbia could have reached Nzola and had any real impact on the sequence.

  4. One would think that with VAR and all of the technology available, these kind of mistakes would be eliminated or at least the blatant mistakes would be caught. Win some lose some, I guess.

  5. After the penalty shtstorm against Viola did anyone expect any favors from the refs/VAR yesterday? It was obvious that the 50/50 calls weren’t going to go our way.

  6. The real problem is that it was a foul and if it’s then it doesn’t matter if it would have an impact it’s a foul he purposely wanted to taken down gabbia so it’s a foul and in the VAR they looked for offside that should make you that the referees and VAR should be better. Also Allegri said they caught off guard bc Milan players expected a foul which it was not given for a broken VAR

  7. Right right, nice nice!!

It’s all other defenders’ fault (esp. Italian cant escape)
To cover Mr. Unknown poor mistake.

    Sounds great to me 😀

    1. You didn’t understand what I wrote. Pisa Player intentionally tackle down gabbia just to make a favourable chance for nzola to use his body so he can score I’m not saying it’s gabbias fault but the referees and VAR system how they used it in that time
