Ruben Amorim has only had a few training sessions with his new AC Milan squad, yet the first week has taught us a lot.
La Gazzetta dello Sport write that after a week of training, the coach chosen by Gerry Cardinale to lead the team back to the Champions League (and maybe more) has given some reassuring signs. Amorim is a man of determination and smiles, and he arrived in Milan with a strong desire to forget Manchester.

What was immediately noticeable was his burning desire to put the past behind him and rediscover the joy of football. The second observation: he tried to engage the team with a positive attitude. He’s not a joker like Massimiliano Allegri, but he tries to create a good atmosphere and generate empathy.
Communication
Amorim started with the language. On the pitch, he speaks English but has made it his goal to learn Italian quickly, which he plans to use soon. In his first training session, he spoke at length with Mario Gila, and those who frequent Milanello say he seeks dialogue with the players, talks, and explains.
Communication will be important in the coming months because Amorim knows how to be direct in his responses and comments. This can bring both advantages and disadvantages, making him a magnetic coach but also exposing him to criticism.
After 12 months of Allegri operating on autopilot (always very politically correct, rarely delivering effective phrases) the approach is set to change.
Love for the role
Amorim was positively impressed by Milanello, and in his initial conversations with Gonçalo Ramos, he described Milan as a family. Gerry Cardinale was also there to greet the coach and the striker during his visit, something Paulo Fonseca noticed.
The desire to move in that direction and build a very united team is evident. Achieving this is obviously not easy, and much will depend on August, with the return of the players from the World Cup.
On the pitch, there will certainly be no double training sessions: training once a day, usually in the morning, with a single session, often longer than usual.
Tactical blueprint
The three-man defence is the starting point, and right from the first training session, Milan were deployed with a 3-4-2-1 that he made his trademark during his trophy-laden time with Sporting CP.
This was clear from the start: Amorim will coach an intense, aggressive team, ready to run vertically, with two wing-backs called upon to create in the attacking phase and two second strikers behind Gonçalo Ramos.
Could this have been understood just by watching his teams play in Portugal and England? Yes, but it’s another thing for it to be confirmed in July at Milanello. Amorim and his three-man back line will stick together through the summer, fall, winter and until a crisis of results separates them.
We must pay attention to UEFA’s guidelines for the 25-man squad required to participate in next season’s Europa League. It goes without saying that the transfer market will also have to be based on these parameters.
UEFA Europa League List: The Rules
In Europe, the squad must consist of a maximum of 25 players (List A) , divided between 17 foreign players, 4 trained in Italy and 4 trained at the club , plus an ever-modifiable List B made up of U21 players who have spent at least two consecutive seasons at the club from the age of 15 onwards. For “trained” players, the specification is as follows:
– Players who between the ages of 15 and 21 have played for AC Milan for three sporting seasons, or 36 months continuously or not: trained in the club’s youth system.
– Players who between the ages of 15 and 21 have played for a club belonging to the same federation for three sporting seasons, or 36 months continuously or not: trained in the Italian youth system.

The arrivals of Gonçalo Ramos and Gila, both official, “complete” AC Milan’s squad. Currently, 17 of the 17 spots are occupied, meaning some transfers are needed.
Odogu is currently a question mark for several reasons. The first is because it remains to be seen whether he will remain at Milan or go on loan. The second is that to be included in the list, as he has neither List B status nor the ability to replace one of the established players, he would have to replace one of the 17 foreign players. The same will apply to Andrej Kostic , who Milan made official in recent weeks. There are no problems in Serie A, however, where they could be registered without any problems.
The future of several players is also to be understood: Leao , Fofana and Loftus-Cheek are on their way out: they would each free up a spot in the list of 17 foreign players. A specification must also be made regarding the players returning from loans to indicate which slots they would occupy.
