CM: AC Milan’s desire and tempting interest – what filters about Pulisic’s contract situation

AC Milan and Christian Pulisic have a mutual desire to move forward together, despite the fact renewal talks are not advancing.

As Calciomercato.com write, Pulisic is stuck in a bit of a rut at the moment, at least compared to his usual high standards. His last goal came on December 28th against Verona, while since then there has been a number of missed chances and a spat with Rafael Leao, plus a worrying interview.

Pulisic went from averaging a goal every 74 minutes in the first part of the season, to not scoring in 14 games. The assist for Adrien Rabiot in the win over Napoli showed that the ability to create is still there though, and the celebrations from him and Youssouf Fofana showed love from team-mates.

A future together

Pulisic chose the quiet area of Busto Arsizio and a house with a large garden like the one on his Pennsylvania estate because he loves running in the woods. He’s far from Milan, away from the lights and chaos of the big city. He prefers the guitar and golf, his great passion.

In other words, he seems happy and has put down some roots of sorts in Lombardy. From a tax perspective, buying a property means that the USA international would be able to continue to benefit from the Growth Decree tax relief scheme.

Pulisic’s current contract expires in 2027, with a net salary of €4m net per year. Thanks to the Growth Decree, the effective tax burden remains low, bringing his gross salary to approximately €5m.

Although the deadline is still far away, Milan strongly consider Pulisic as central to their plans and want to extend the relationship. A more complex period in the relationship does not change the views of a club that has always admired Pulisic not only for his technical qualities but also his humility.

The contract also includes a clause in favour of the Rossoneri club that allows Milan to exercise an option for a further season, until June 2028. This guarantee allows the club to plan the player’s future with greater certainty, avoiding surprises on the market.

Pulisic has been stalling, likely ‘tempted’ by the sirens that have begun to ring in both the Premier League and Saudi Arabia, and Milan have respected this desire. The goal is to close the deal before the World Cup with a contract extension until 2031, with a slight pay rise.

  1. I think he’s happy with life at AC Milan, but the team needs to perform. If he has a clear role in a team that finishes top 4 this season, both sides will sign the contract in May and put this to bed. If he doesn’t have a clear role (quite possible in Allegri ball) or the team does not finish top 4 (also quite possible), then all bets are off and he will wait until after the World Cup to talk to his agent again. At that point, if he has a good Cup, then he will have a lot of suitors and could easily wind up on another team. If say… Liverpool or Madrid or Bayern or PSG came with $50m for Milan and a big bump in pay for Puli, he could be gone, just like that, if his role isn’t clear or the team doesn’t have Champion’s League money coming next year.

So root for the team and Puli to have success the rest of the way and then worry about the contract after season success is secured. That’s clearly what he’s doing. We should do the same.

  2. no brainer to renew him.
