Tuttosport: What Modric said to Allegri that forced midfield position change

The role that Massimiliano Allegri and AC Milan envisaged for Luka Modric is not the one he is currently operating in, a report claims.

Modric was perhaps the biggest name that Milan signed in the summer transfer window as he joined after his contract at Real Madrid expired. As the most decorated player in the long history of Los Blancos, the switch to join his boyhood club Milan generated a lot of attention.

There was a lot of deliberation about the role that the Croatian would play and how Allegri would configure the midfield. Modric has played in a three-man midfield or a double pivot, with the coach opting to go with the former thus far.

According to Tuttosport (via MilanPosts) this morning, Modric was originally signed to play as a mezzala – a box-to-box player – but he immediately made it clear to Allegri that he preferred to operate in the centre to dictate the tempo.

That is exactly where he has played so far, as the deeper-lying of the three to try and create from a deeper position. Whether that changes based on Samuele Ricci’s playing time and the return of Ardon Jashari remains to be seen.

  1. So the three best midfielders and the 3 newest, all want to play the same position, great. They really did a good job in building this team…

  2. If Modrić says then Modrić gets.
To be honest, I also thought he’d be better as a mezzala. Heck with Croatia, he sometimes even played directly behind the striker and looked terrific.
But if he prefers to be placed centrally, then we’d have to adjust.

  3. With the coming back from International break, it is most likely that Ricci will start over Modric, and I hope he trully impresses like he did in the pre-season. Then the real competetion begins between both, or a compromise of how to field both in games will be clear.

I do hope Ricci fills his shoes, once Modric finally retires.

    1. It happens that the 40yo looks like our best midfielder by a comfortable margin.
And I don’t know if he is calling the shots, or just stating where he prefers to play. Players do that all the time and I think Allegri has too much respect for Modrić to ignore his request and force him in certains positions.

    2. You mean perhaps one of the best ever in his position? Yeah I’d listen to the dude with all the CLs under his belt too.

  4. Don’t worry, Max will overuse Modric and then he’ll get injured.. that’s probably how Ricci (and perhaps Jashari) would get proper game time.

  5. There is no evidence he even said this though. Just some random journalist needing to publish something. So created a “report” that Modric has told an experienced coach where he needs to play him. There is no evidence of this even happening.

Modric’s whole career he has had the attitude of playing wherever the coach puts him and not complaining.

    People need to chill

  6. When you have 6 champions league titles to your name, you get a little street credit. Toni Kroos was the braun to Modric’s brains. So let Modric cook while he can. Allegri would do well to listen.

When Ibra came in, Pioli was right to listen then too. Look at all the set-pieces that were practiced once Ibra made his presence felt.
