AC Milan’s Scudetto win means more than just the amazing trophy that will be on display, as it also has ramifications regarding next season and the draw for the Champions League group stages.
With the success of Reggio Emilia and the consequent 19th league title, Milan will be in pot one for the draw that will take place during the closed season, joining the other winners of Europe’s main leagues as well as Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.
Despite a UEFA coefficient ranking of 38,000 points which is lower than almost all of the other confirmed sides in the draw, winning the league means pot one and in theory a slightly more favourable draw than 2021-22.

How are the coefficients calculated?
From participation in champion league/Europe league
It’s based only on European games and over a 5 year period, so you have to qualify for Europe to get ranking points and then you have to perform. It’s a system designed to keep European ‘regulars’ apart until the knock-out stages and to make sure they have a very favourable chance to proceed.
But it’s a huge penalty for teams who haven’t qualified for a while (or ever before). If you look at some of the crazy difficult groups Atalanta got, this was the reason, and the same reason Milan’s group last season was so tricky.
This is a huge ‘bonus’ for the long-term possibilities for the club, because it’s a chance to get a better draw and improves the possibility of qualifying for the next stage, thus addressing some of that weakness in coefficient and making future years’ draws better too (although I’m not sure it will be as relevant in the new format).
Especially nice that two of the hardest teams in Pot 3 can’t be draw either (Napoli and Inter)
Correct. And there is more weight placed on the more recent years of that 5 year period. So Bayern Munich doesn’t get as many “points counted” toward it’s score for his Champions League victory it recently had than Chelsea does for its CL victory just last year.
Also, Frankfurt have more points than we do because they advanced so far in Europa League in recent years plus of course they won the entire tournament this year and you get a lot of points for that.
This is HUGE for us. We were very unlucky in this current CL season getting the “Group of Death” with Liverpool, Atletico and Porto.
With some good offseason signings, we will be poised to not only get out of the group stages next year; but also make some noise in knockout phases and advance some more rounds at least!
FORZA MILAN!!!
