GdS: Two close, one distant – where Milan stand on three crucial contract renewals

With the dust having settled after the winter transfer window, the AC Milan management have more negotiations to face, namely the ones related to contract extensions.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that at present there are three top-tier players with whom the club is negotiating renewals. In one case – that of Tijjani Reijnders – we are now very close to an agreement and an announcement.

Speaking to France Football, the Dutchman confirmed it himself: “If I play football, it is to write my name in the history books. I hope that this will be possible at Milan, with whom I will soon extend my relationship.”

Reijnders’ current contract expires in 2028, so there is no real urgency, but the last few years have taught the directors that it is advisable to move ahead of time. He should extend for another season, with an option until 2030 and a pay rise from €1.7m net per year to €3.5m, with additional bonuses.

The discussion with Mike Maignan is also well underway. The French goalkeeper has a central role in this team and this year he was rewarded with the captain’s armband, given to him by the incoming coach Sergio Conceiçao a few weeks ago.

It’s an easy road for him too and in his case, unlike Reijnders, there is urgency since his current contract expires in 2026. As for Reijnders, the extension should go until 2029 with a salary increasing from €3.2m to €5m net (plus bonuses).

The club’s goal is to formalise the new agreement by the summer, so as not to start next season with a number one goalkeeper who has a deal with less than 12 months to run. All the signs, though, are very positive.

On the flip side, the dialogue between the management and Theo Hernandez is not making any progress at the moment and since his contract also expires in 2026, a decision will have to be made in the summer.

Without an agreement, the full-back would seem destined to be put on the market, so as not to risk losing him for free. The reason for the current stalemate is imaginable: since the first discussions, the Frenchman wanted to earn the same as Rafael Leao, so €7m net per season including bonuses.

It is a request that Milan had already decline during the ‘good times’, and now that Theo is having his worst season since he arrived at Milanello they expect a reduction in economic demands which so far has not been forthcoming.

  1. They were willing to sell him to Como in January, so he’s as good as gone in the summer.

But just for the sake of chaos, I want to see the hysteria if no one comes for him.

      1. Como CEO confirmed it. Milan was planning to sell Theo and he will be gone this summer. He’s not worth renewing at 6-7m per season.

Theo will go to Real Madrid since Alphonso Davis decided to stay at Bayern Munich.

        1. He refused to read the article about it which he himself commented under. And now repeated the same thing here. Incredible. Once the mind is made up, everything else goes contrary

  2. Theo stayed unresolved untill last minute. Like Leao case, but probably they will give him offer sufficient to sing new deal.

  3. When he was at his best and in my view he has been a consistent performer since his arrival he most definitely deserved as good a salary as Leao. He can still salvage his season though but as things stands maybe a more performance related contract combined with what he already earns could solve this issue as he should also take a good look at himself and some of his performances this season as they have been dire but lately he seems to have picked himself up better.

  4. I’ll just reiterate that we are dealing with RedBird calling the shots which means that they wocus on brand value. Theo is one of those pieces that increases it, so I don’t see them letting go of Theo unless a stupid offer comes in. And there have been no rumblings of such. So……

  5. Theo Hernandez as painful as it may sound he should start to accepting offers from other clubs this summer. Most of defensive mistakes happen from that left flank. He needs to explode before this season ends to make management think otherwise. Bartesaghi has shown potential but I think he is still needs to come of the bench. Leao for me is untouchable he is the Shevchenko of our era. I would prefer if Theo leaves than Leao.
