The upcoming mercato will be interesting for a number of reasons. However, AC Milan need it to be the opposite, really.
An interesting window needs to be one of calm for Milan. Ultimately, recent mercatos have been quite hit and miss. Perhaps the summer’s business can be excused here, but the late spree suggests otherwise.
So, this is why calm is needed; even if it is asking for a lot.
After all, every football fan wants their team to go for certain players in certain positions. It would be a lie if we all didn’t have a shortlist in some form imagined for the upcoming mercato. However, it is not that simple.
The Rossoneri will likely be in the same position, where they have ideas on who can improve the squad straight away. Ensuring that they are affordable and available, perhaps in a different order, though, is the issue.
So, what has the priority got to be?
Where to go?
For many, the Diavolo’s defence is solid enough. They have one of the best records in the division, so it may not be the first priority for Igli Tare. However, just one injury can throw a spanner into the works.
So, it certainly needs to be looked at. David Odogu is not ‘proper’ cover for the senior players, so that is why someone like Thiago Silva could be useful for a few months, just for peace of mind and leadership if nothing else.
Alternatively, the other big issue is at the other end of the pitch. Santiago Gimenez, then, holds the keys to potentially unlock the Scudetto. If he were to start scoring goals, as he did for Feyenoord, he would turn the lock himself.
Alternatively, his exit could be the difference. With him leaving, another face would surely arrive. Who that would be remains in the air, but Jean Philippe Mateta’s name is one that would deliver some excitement to the fans.

Either way, the Diavolo have a task for January, and with the Scudetto looking increasingly possible, decisions must be made. Do Milan pounce and push for a second star or do they put faith in the current squad?
Time is running out for the club to decide in a timely manner. Excitement is not needed; instead, maturity and prolificacy are.
