AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca decided to take aim at the team last night following the win over Red Star at San Siro, and the reasons have been explained.
Calciomercato.com write how in the freezing cold of San Siro, Tammy Abraham’s late goal sent the 53,000 fans home happy after a disappointing show from every point of view. The only positive was the result, though, and Fonseca made his thoughts clear after the game.
“I am a person who is not satisfied only with the result. Obviously the most important thing is that we won and that we are in a good position but I am like this, there are things that are difficult to change,” he said.
“And sometimes I am tired of struggling with these things. I am not satisfied with the team’s performance. I know that I work every day to prepare the team, to do well.
“I don’t know if everyone in the team can say this. We had the obligation to arrive today and do everything to win the match. And we didn’t do it.”
They were strong, clear and harsh words, which could lead to another rift with the team. After the defeat against Fiorentina the Portuguese coach had harshly attacked his team, but this time he has done it after a win.
When training resumes Fonseca will debrief the team and clarify what he did not like in the mediocre performance he saw. The main problem lies in the attitude of a team that seems to rest on its victories and not learn from the lessons of defeats.
Fonseca will also speak to some individuals such as Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria (the captain who ignored the coach after he was brought up), even if other players could also end up in the dock too.
A coach has every right to make the team face up to their responsibilities and Fonseca has already accustomed us to direct and forthright communication. The signal, however, is that he has not yet found harmony with his group and the mediocrity has reached breaking point.
Those sound like the words of a man who is used to success and can’t understand why his methods are not working with a particular group, not the words of someone who has laboured to mediocrity everywhere he has been.
Just get players from Futuro. Start Liberali and Camarda in some matches. Just 10 min is not enough.
Have you seen how futuro is doing in serie c?
JAJAJAJA PERO SI NO PUDISTE!!!! CON EL EQUIPO Y SUS FIGURAS!!! PARA EL QUE APOYAN A ÉSTE PERDEDOR… SÓLO MIRAD LA TABLA!!! /7!!!/A 12 PUNTOS DEL LÍDER Y A 9!!!!! DE CHAMPIONS 🤢🤮🇵🇹🤡👍🏻
Play Bartesaghi, Jimenez, Liberalli, Camarda, Traore and Sandri from Futuro
from regulars Maignan, CB duo as per usual, Fofana and Leao
45 minutes to prove your point…
Eletu, Malaspina, Hodzic can also be tried
Fifa boy
Incel boy, f off))
You can’t just plug & play like that. There’s a reason those kids are at Futuro/primavera.
And no they aren’t ready for senior football.
the older ones aren’t really performing either… not all 6 will succeed, but if you can get a third or hopefully half of them rolling – you effectively widen your options for the final games of the year.
Yamal and Cubarsi were also kids but now they are starters… we have quite a lot of talent, let’s use them once…
If he’s tired and it’s understandable, he should resign and allow a new coach to take over.
You say if we will be getting top coach instead… Ibra wanted van Bommel and Tudor… Allegri is 1 step forward and 3 steps back…
Man Untd put money for a good coach, our clown-fest of a management will never do something like this. if he fields Futuro and they show no promise again, I will switch to Fonseca hate-train but I think we are on the right path
I’m more in the wishing land rather than describing what is going to happen.
Fonseca, for me if we’re officially out of the top4 race, there is no reason to keep him. He had a minimum requirment which is to get us to UCL this year and if he fails that what’s the point in keeping him ?
Ibra and Moncada should be sacked as well in that regard.
If you’re really tired, stop playing this 4231 formation and switch to a 343. Atleast just give it a try and see.
It is a coach’s job to prepare the team tactically for matches. To me it is preposterous that at the highest level of sport, players need motivation from the coach to play hard and with concentration. Let’s be honest besides Scudetto season, this Milan team have often been like this. …roller coaster of performances. Beating a big team and then losing to a minnow the following week. This is not new.
Winning coaches get their men to follow them forward ,even through difficult patches and not just in tactics.
Fonseca is a brave man and is distinguishing himself for his next job ,as he is not the right person to lead this team. Pioli in his early years, with his soft but inspiring approach, did wonders and collectively they punched above their weight even though he had Maldini who helped him immensely.(No matter many say ,Paolo’s departure has had a very negative effect on the pitch and around it)
Now it’s the contrary , this teams play was dreadful and it’s only with individual quality that we are winning, but as we all know that won’t take us far.
Sack Fonseca , he will excel in teams without known stars, and get a good coach (preferably Italian) who has the necessary authority to lead the players, in other words a coach who has won previously with pedigree. Just my opinion.
Since the Scudetto season Milan have been like this. Woefully inconsistent. We captured a magic moment in the Scudetto year. Milan during Pioli tenure (full seasons) finished 2nd, 1st, 4th, and 2nd again last year. So Pioli approach worked until it didn’t. Now some players are sulking and not applying themselves, that cannot be the managers fault. You play for the club, the shirt, your paycheck, and personal pride. Effort and attitude is not something that should be contingent upon who is in the front office or shouting instruction from the touch line.
I agree with you that Milan should have went for a “star” coach. Especially with all the new players brought in. We needed a strong and experienced coach. But this is where we are now and not giving an effort because you don’t care for the coach is not an excuse we should accept.
First he bashes the team and then apologises as being tired. Weak. Resign.
There was no apology. The comments about being tired were after the game: “ And sometimes I am tired of struggling with these things. I am not satisfied with the team’s performance…”
Bro I’m tired too. Tired seeing this inconsistent team. We’re either prime Barca or Chievo Verona.
It took Pep like 6 years to be tired and Klopp 10. He’s had 4 or so months lol 😂
It’s understandable if the coach wasn’t satisfied with their performance. The fans weren’t, either. Their performance was poor. The game could have gone either way.
How about you leave? You obviously have no idea what you’re doing and you are not a manager for a club like Milan. I think Genoa needs a new coach, he isn’t even a manager…
Next we’ll draw with Dinamo Zagreb 😀 . I mean this guy should have left after nearly losing points against Crvena Zvezda. Instead of being angry he could have admitted to himself he isn’t for this job and resigned.
Sh*t’s hit the fan if Fonseca is publicly calling people out. Team in’t behind him? Where’s the management on this? Eerily quiet.
Next he will blame the fans just like the Southampton manager has done. Thats the best straw to clutch for this shyster.
Woah! I’ve never seen a coach from a post game interview saying “tired” while he’s having the job and complaining about his team.. lol never seen it
He’s asking for a leave. Coming into this game, the players probably felt it – why fight for this man? haha
Blaming everyone but himself… maybe examine your god awful lineups and tactical choices, you clown. It’s no wonder the players don’t respect him
Good for Fonseca. We need a higher standard and he is trying to bring it.
I watched the post-match interview with Sky IT.
I would disagree it was “scathing.” (Maybe his tone wasn’t conveyed in the translation?) If anything, it was so clear how disappointed he was. He looked like a Dad who was just disheartened with what he saw of his kids.
Even the studio was kind to him, encouraged him for the possibility of finishing in the top 8, and thanked him for his politeness and honesty.
Regardless of what the players think of his tactics or squad selection, the fact is the players have to give more. Full stop. If you’ve ever played sports, I think we can all agree we’ve played with managers we didn’t like… but it should never stop us from trying to play with pride and give our best.
So many of the squad do not.
If they sack him, it won’t change the attitude of the players.
Bro first of all 80% of this forum has never played sport much less football.
Secondly I’d say at a big club you need to watch your words more carefully as it can get over blown….or you use it to your advantage. I don’t think Fonsy understands this
“Bro first of all 80% of this forum has never played sport much less football.”
fair enough 😂😂😂
And yes, that’s true. Things can get blown up quite quickly at a club of this size. At the same time, I can understand his emotion immediately post-match and I think it’s hard to disagree with his comments haha. We’ll see how they perform the next match.
Fonseca out
The way AC plays cannot win trophies. Starting from the back, constantly engaging the goalkeeper in the hope of catching the opposing team out of position is not going to work. Opposing teams are not that stupid. AC plays a very predictable game and opposing team are successfully exploiting it and scoring. A different coach will most likely get better service from the current AC Milan squad. Management is more likely to blame for poor personnel selection. The season is over and doubt if they can get into the fourth spot when other teams are constantly scoring and wining games. AC can only try to save their embarrassment. Hope they prove me wrong !!!
