GdS: Why Loftus-Cheek could end up being the ‘key player’ for Milan in 2025-26

After earning praise for his performances in the summer preseason friendlies, a report has now picked Ruben Loftus-Cheek out as AC Milan’s key man.

The 2025-26 Serie A season restarts with plenty of changes: new coaches, new faces, and players ready to take centre stage who perhaps have not managed to do so up until this point.

From key players like Bremer at Juventus and Calhanoglu at Inter, to potential surprises like Folorunsho at Cagliari and Carboni at Genoa, next season promises to be packed with those who can make the difference.

RLC: Milan’s surprise weapon?

La Gazzetta dello Sport write that Milan will restart with Massimiliano Allegri, with the option of a three-man or four-man defence, but definitely a three-man midfield. This department boasts some high-quality players with good ball possession like Samuele Ricci and Luka Modric.

That means that – in order to preserve balance – one between Youssouf Fofana and Loftus-Cheek should play almost every game, and Allegri is very intrigued by the Englishman precisely because he has unique qualities in the squad.

Loftus-Cheek is physically explosive, a box-to-box midfielder, and knows how to get into the box. The unknown factor is his physical condition and his injury-prone nature.

In two seasons with the Rossoneri, he missed 37 games due to injury problems. But if he’s in good shape, he could be like a new signing.

  1. It will not be surprising.
RLC, when healthy, played well and was a key player.
He was very good in his 1st season.
Last season, he was never healthy.

    1. I agree with the spirit of what you are saying but I’d qualify it as “He played well when fit and _coached well._”

I realize he scored 10 for Pioli, but if you really look at that season there wasn’t much else to his game. He either scored or he was largely anonymous.

The Portuguese Pair didn’t know what to do with him, then he couldn’t stay on the field due to all sorts of fitness follies.

So I find myself saying again: “I have a lot of confidence in this players growth b/c it’s Allegri who is responsible for it”

  2. This article has been printed at least once per week since the end of last season, so if he is good it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Biggest factor is whether he can stay fit. If he is, then he’s got a valuable role to play.

    1. Well AI isn’t well known for making sense, it looks like they just connected one to recycle and rewrite old articles to get more engagement and make more money. Soon all “news” will be worthless AI slop and then it will stop as nobody wants that.

      1. Here is how you can tell it is not AI: Spelling and grammar issues.

This is a manual and repetitive effort which really makes it all the more sad. Except: This site monetizes every click. Those ads are “impressions” and they get some small fraction of a pence for them that add up over millions of click to the salary of the guy doing the repetitively poor grammar and spelling.

On the other side of AI (b/c I nerd this way), topics that are probabilistic are in its wheel house. Got some symptoms and what to know what is going on? YOu can learn a great deal b/f you go to the doc so you are ready to be an informed patient. Want to know how to fix the wood on the exterior of your home? Take some pics, upload them and ask for advice. Then question everything and ask for sources.

AI is like having an over eager junior researcher on staff. If you treat it like that, then it is an extraordinary tool. (Like Google became circa 2008)
