AC Milan made the decision to go after Mehdi Taremi over Romelu Lukaku after some intense internal reflections, according to Franco Ordine.
In his latest column for MilanNews, Ordine admits that Lukaku ‘would have been a starter’ for Milan and would have ‘demanded a role’ as the number one of the attacking department.
This is something that became ‘a fundamental issue’ which convinced him to abandon the idea of going back to Inter and promise himself first to Max Allegri’s Juventus and then to go to Roma.
When Lukaku’s name emerged as a possibility, it produced a ‘very interesting internal debate’ at Milan, who made the decision to ‘not ruin the atmosphere at Milanello’.
The feeling was that Olivier Giroud and perhaps some other team members might not have looked so favourably on the signing of a player like Lukaku, who would command such an important role.
Milan’s mission to find a striker with ‘physical and technical characteristics closer to Giroud and the humility to deputise to the Frenchman’ continued, and that is why they decided to go for Taremi instead.
