Fabrizio Romano has shed light on Luka Modric’s decision to renew with AC Milan, confirming a Real Madrid return is on his mind too.
Many thought that Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League plus the departure of Massimiliano Allegri as the head coach meant that Modric’s fairytale with his boyhood club would be one that only ended up lasting a year.

However, the Croatian put pen to paper on a contract extension which will see him remain for 2026-27, under the orders of the new head coach Ruben Amorim. After that there will be a decision to make, but a possible return to Real Madrid is certainly not a secret.
‘Completely focused on Milan’
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Romano spoke about Modric on his 41st birthday, who decided to extend his contract with Milan for another season over the summer.
“As Luka Modric told Marca in recent days, Real Madrid is his home and he hopes to return to Lo Blancos one day,” he began (via MilanNews).
“Florentino Perez is personally waiting for him at Real Madrid, and during the last elections, which he won, he already had contact to suggest to those close to Modric the possibility of seeing him in management one day. Clearly, we’re not talking about the pitch, but about management.
“Today, Luka is completely focused on Milan. The Croatian chose to return to Milan at a time of uncertainty, like the early June when he was at the Rossoneri, when the management discussion was underway.
“The directors were sacked, as was the coach, to whom Modric was very close because the player had an excellent relationship with Allegri. Yet he chose Milan, as a true Milanista, as a man who doesn’t abandon the ship in times of difficulty.
“Everything about Modric is in that choice, all his Rossoneri faith, his loyalty to his ideas, and the desire to be a leader even in stormy seas, not just when things are going well. Modric is completely focused on Milan.
“Real Madrid expect him as a director, but Modric will dictate the pace, and I guarantee you 100% that today the Croatian champion’s mind is on Milan and on the possibility of doing his best in the Rossoneri shirt.”
