Watch: Xabi Alonso and staff celebrate after learning of Milan’s elimination

By Oliver Fisher -

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and one of his assistants were spotted reacting to the news that Roma had made it through against AC Milan last night.

Alonso’s Leverkusen qualified for the Europa League semi-finals by eliminating West Ham in the quarter-finals last night, winning 3-1 on aggregate, and they knew they would face the winner of the Milan-Roma tie.

At full-time as the staff made their way onto the pitch, one of Alonso’s collaborators could be seen checking his phone and relaying the news that Roma had gone through, which seemed to draw a celebratory reaction.

Daniele De Rossi was told in his post-match press conference that Leverkusen celebrated learning they would face Roma in the semi-finals, and he responded as follows.

“I haven’t seen it. I wouldn’t like to comment, maybe it’s just a sense of revenge because they went out against us last year. Xabi Alonso has always been a gentleman as a footballer and I think he is even today. I still have great respect for him.”

  1. This scene right here proves that some opponents know what AC Milan are capable of, in the back of their minds they didn’t want Milan to qualify for the next round because it COULD spell disaster for them. but Pioli think we are a Top 4 team. Many teams don’t fear us anymore, we have become easy picking

    1. nah. If Roma beat Milan (and they did) that means that Roma is better and more of a danger atm. It think they were hoping for Roma because of last year when Roma kicked them out like DDR said

  2. Don’t mislead people. They didn’t celebrate because Milan is out but they celebrated it because they have unfinished business with Roma from last season and they want revenge.

Leverkusen is NOT scared of Milan, not even 1 percent.

  3. Why is it not possible that they celebrated Atalanta vs Liverpool. I would be happier for that outcome in their place.

  4. In the past 3 years I have never looked forward to a team which we would exact revenge upon. So to see Bayer celebrate that we lost and Roma progress is strange to me.
    But I fold my comment
