Bennacer could return to Milan early as Algeria struggle in AFCON

Ismael Bennacer is currently on international duty with Algeria for the African Cup of Nations, also known as AFCON. However, after two draws in the first two group games, the midfielder could return to Milan earlier than expected.

Algeria faced Burkina Faso in the second group stage match yesterday but only managed a 2-2 draw, scoring the equaliser in the 95th minute. As a result, they are on two points after two games and now risk getting knocked out early, in need of a good display against Mauritania.

A win or even a draw could be enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams. Nevertheless, Algeria have clearly struggled and thus might find things difficult in the knockout stage, with an early exit not to be excluded.

Bennacer missed the most recent game due to a slight discomfort and it remains to be seen if he will play more this tournament. Milan are monitoring the situation closely and as said, the midfielder could return earlier than first expected.

In the meantime, Stefano Piokli will rely on Yacine Adli, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah for the more defensive midfield roles. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been given a more advanced role in recent games, also scoring a goal against Udinese last night.
