CM: Retegui explodes after €12m Genoa move – regret for Milan and Inter

AC Milan were one of the teams that showed an interest in signing Mateo Retegui during the summer, and he continues to convince after his move to Serie A.

Calciomercato.com write how Genoa managed to close the operation during the summer mercato with Boca Juniors, beating the intense competition from Eintracht Frankfurt on the final straight.

The results so far have been very positive: two goals on his debut in the Coppa Italia against Modena, plus three goals in the first six Serie A matches he has played, equalling a certain Diego Milito.

Genoa paid €12m for a player who recently became an Italy international. Retegui didn’t think twice about accepting the call-up from former Azzurri coach Robero Mancini and that is also partly why he wanted a move to Serie A so badly.

After such a good start, the 24-year-old is worth at least double what Genoa paid, and the Milan clubs might have some regret. The striker had been a concrete target for Inter and the Nerazzurri started talking with Boca Juniors, but Simone Inzaghi wanted a striker with different characteristics.

Milan had also followed him for a long time with their scouts in South America but their interest never resulted in a real negotiation, with a similar amount being invested on Noah Okafor instead.
