CorSport: Serie A begin devising play-off plans in case COVID situation worsens

Serie A have already begun studying potential play-off scenarios in case they are forced to suspend the league due to Coronavirus, a report claims.

According to newspaper il Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), the chaos that ensued over the Juventus-Napoli game – in which the home side were handed a 3-0 walkover as the Neapolitans didn’t travel amid confusion over guidance from their local government – has caused Serie A to look at solutions.

The schedule is already very crowded and therefore there is very little room for postponed games to be moved back, so if the situation worsens then the idea of play-offs are once again being discussed in case the season must be ended early.

The Lega are thinking of two hypotheses:

– There would be a first phase in which each team faces a limited number of teams around them in a sort of ‘qualification phase’. At the end of this, when added to ranking from the first round, you would have the final ranking. After this phase, there would be play-offs with matches for the Scudetto, the Europa League and relegation.

– The second hypothesis concerns a final eight teams. Home and away matches would then determine who finishes where in a fight for the Scudetto, Champions League and Europa League.
