It seems as though there may be a potential turning point in the future of centre-back Alessio Romagnoli as he could now stay at the club.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport writes (via MilanLive), Romagnoli has lost his starting spot and is only under contract until 2022. He receives a salary of about €3.5m net per season and Milan seem unwilling to offer an increase, while his agent Mino Raiola rather predictably has a different opinion, as he would like a pay rise for his client.
However, the paper explains that Milan actually don’t want to sell Romagnoli because if next season the team are in the Champions League, there will be a need to have more quality defensive players and there is still confidence in the captain, despite having lost his starting position. The player himself is also ready to accept competition and the Rossoneri management are happy to enter negotiations over a renewal.
Maldini said that discussions on the renewals are frozen until the end of the season, so we have to wait to understand what future Romagnoli may have, but it is an important opening from both parties.
