Jean-Philippe Mateta has shed some light on how much it hurt when his move to AC Milan collapse a few months ago.

Mateta was on the verge of making a dream move to Milan right at the end of the most recent winter transfer window. Just when it seemed all done, the Rossoneri sent emissaries to assess the French striker’s knee condition and they ultimately called the deal off over medical concerns.
After a period spent on the sidelines, over the weeks the striker has regained his footing in south London and tomorrow he will play for a spot in the Conference League final, buoyed by a 3-1 first-leg victory against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Mateta: Milan move collapse ‘hurt’
Meanwhile, Milan are still searching for their No.9 of the future. Amid talk about possible renewed interest, Mateta was interviewed by L’Equipe in his home country and he was asked about the effect that the failed move to Milan had on him at the time.
“Honestly, it hurt me psychologically at the time, when they told me it was off… Then, I quickly thought about how to recover,” he said.
“I consulted several specialists, and when they assured me there was no need for surgery, I focused on the next step, until my return. I worked hard to show Glasner that the ‘JP’ leader was there to take back his place and win with the team.”
