Kaladze draws comparison between Milan in 2007 and now: “Saved our season”

Having been knocked out of the Champions League and the Coppa Italia, AC Milan’s only chance of lifting a trophy this season is the Europa League. The Rossoneri find themselves in a 2007-esque position, as highlighted by Kakha Kaladze.

In addition to the aforementioned tournaments, the Scudetto is now pretty much impossible as Inter find themselves 16 points ahead. Indeed, the Europa League is the last opportunity for Pioli to leave the club on a relatively good note.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, sharing his thoughts on Milan at great length, the former defender Kaladze also drew a comparison between today and the team back in 2007. Winning the Champions League ‘saved our season’, as he described it, and the Europa League could have a similar effect today.

“In 2007, European football – even if that was the Champions League – saved our season, so I say yes. But, regardless of any result, a lot of work is needed to recreate a strong club and recover the ground that separates it from Inter. It’s the mission of the directors, starting with Ibra,” he stated.

Of course, what Milan did back in 2007 was much more of an accomplishment, but Kaladze is certainly right. Finishing in second place and winning the Europa League would make this season look very good on paper.
