AC Milan and Inter are separated by just two points going into the final three games of the season, but the clubs are nowhere near as close off the pitch when looking at the accounts.
As Calciomercato.com reports, few at the beginning of the season believed that Pioli’s squad were able to fight until the end for the Scudetto because they did not have the same depth as Inter or even other rivals for top spot and they did not strengthen as much as others in January.
However, Milan lead the league and need 7 points from 9 to go on and capture their first title since 2010-11, and the balance sheets of the two Milanese clubs tell us just how impressive a feat it would be.
The Rossoneri – led by the American fund Elliott Management – have always been very attentive to their wallet, having spent two thirds of what Inter have. The total annual cost of this season’s squad is €175m: €110m on salaries and €65m in depreciation.
Depreciation is the total transfer fee spent on a player divided by the length of their contract to work out their cost per year added together for everyone in the squad.
This is €85m euros less than Inter, who spend around €160m on wages and €100m on depreciation, for a total of €260m. In terms of annual cost, Milan are the fourth highest in Serie A after Juventus with €370m, Inter at €260m and Napoli’s €215m.
