AC Milan were unable to take advantage of the position they found themselves in on Sunday night as they failed to beat Cagliari at San Siro.
As MilanNews writes, the Rossoneri – on Sunday 23 May – will play for qualification for the next Champions League in Bergamo against Atalanta. The team cannot rely on what Napoli and Juventus will do or watch on; the team need to win. After wasting their ‘match point’ against Leonardo Semplici’s side, another one is in hand against Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, who will play in the cup final on Wednesday night.
The report adds how the importance of participation in the Champions League after seven years of absence involves everyone in the club. For starters it would guarantee an extra €40m in revenues, which would be fundamental both for the summer market and to give life to the project started two seasons ago by Elliott.
The fans are waiting for the return too, and to miss out after being first in the standings for so long would be criminal. With the Champions League, Milan would look with more serenity to the renewals of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Hakan Calhanoglu, Franck Kessie, Davide Calabria, Alessio Romagnoli and Simon Kjaer. In addition, confidence in Pioli would be justified.
The Rossoneri project would suffer a further slowdown if the team miss out though, as Pioli would not be sure to stay, and at that point the club could decide to change coach and start a new cycle. The renewals of the aforementioned players would become very complicated and two key players like Donnarumma and Calhanoglu would almost certainly leave, creating a considerable economic and patrimonial damage to the club.
The lost revenues would weigh heavily on the club’s next balance sheet and the summer market will mostly be made up of exchanges and loans, without major expenses to buy players.
