AC Milan had seemingly done enough to keep Luka Modric for another season, but they undid their work on the final day of the season.

The questions about Modric’s future had been present throughout the season and it seemed likely that he was going to stay with Milan at one point. Indeed, they were on track for the Champions League and he had even begun to look for an apartment.
However, the final stretch of the season was woeful. He missed a great deal of the run-in after a facial injury against Juventus and the Rossoneri looked lost.
Results were poor and they eventually bottled a place in the top four, which would have gotten them a place in the Champions League next season.
Modric could stay but Madrid appeals
Earlier today, it was reported that Modric was leaning towards retiring after the World Cup, with the Diavolo’s project not being seen as something to be enthusiastic about.
However, there may be a minuscule chance he stays, with Matteo Moretto announcing that he was planning to renew, as MilanNews relays.
“At one point, his desire was to renew and stay at Milan for another season, then what happened happened, and so Modric called everything into question. What I can tell you is that he hasn’t made a final decision yet.
“Modric wants to wait until the end of the World Cup, and I confirm that he could also decide to retire and return to Real Madrid in another role, which is still to be determined. Everything is still open.”
