Romano: Morata was Ibrahimovic’s favourite option – Lukaku never advanced

Alvaro Morata was the favoured striker option for Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer and he pushed heavily for Milan to get the deal over the line.

As has been reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Ibrahimovic viewed Morata as the best striker option available to Milan, although it is not clear whether that was the case when Joshua Zirkzee was still on the market.

One of the high-profile names that was linked with Milan was Romelu Lukaku, with Chelsea trying to get the Belgian striker out of the club as he is not in the plans of new coach Enzo Maresca.

Despite the reported interest from Milan in Lukaku

Several calls were made to Morata to convince him of the project and now that Euro 2024 has come to a close, with Morata lifting the trophy with Spain, the deal can go through.

Milan will be paying a release clause of €13m for Morata which means his signing makes sense from an economic standpoint, but he will require wages of around €5.5m per season which makes him one of the top earners at the club.

His medical should take place slightly later this week in Madrid before he then travels to Milan to sign.
