Romano: Morata was Ibrahimovic’s favourite option – Lukaku never advanced

By Euan Burns -

Alvaro Morata was the favoured striker option for Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer and he pushed heavily for Milan to get the deal over the line.

As has been reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Ibrahimovic viewed Morata as the best striker option available to Milan, although it is not clear whether that was the case when Joshua Zirkzee was still on the market.

One of the high-profile names that was linked with Milan was Romelu Lukaku, with Chelsea trying to get the Belgian striker out of the club as he is not in the plans of new coach Enzo Maresca.

Despite the reported interest from Milan in Lukaku

Several calls were made to Morata to convince him of the project and now that Euro 2024 has come to a close, with Morata lifting the trophy with Spain, the deal can go through.

Milan will be paying a release clause of €13m for Morata which means his signing makes sense from an economic standpoint, but he will require wages of around €5.5m per season which makes him one of the top earners at the club.

His medical should take place slightly later this week in Madrid before he then travels to Milan to sign.

  1. I don’t like morata but I’m focusing on his positive attributes. Feelings aside the move does make sense..
Not a splash signing, but we already have splash on the left wing and the right wing.

Ladlst night I found it ridiculous when stones was man marking him and at times he’d faul morata closer to the spain box than the middle of the pitch to get the ball off him

  2. Zirkzee was my favorite, but Morata isn’t too shabby either.
Neither one of them is a prolific goalscorer, but their movement, their runs, their link up play, their work rate would allow Leao and Pulisic/Chukwueze to score more goals.
But Milan does need another striker besides Morata. Fulkrug would be ideal, but Tammy wouldn’t be a bad choice especially if they can get them by swapping a player plus some change.

    1. From Datamb:

Alvaro Morata is the only striker in the top 5 leagues to rank in the 90+ percentile for non-penalty goals, expected goals, and aerial win rate

No La Liga striker has a higher aerial win rate (54.3%) or dribble success rate (70.2%)

  3. I’m surprised how critical about Morata people are, but the story of his career is being loved by coaches and teammates but struggling for public approval due to not being that clinical finisher and thus being looked at as responsible for missing big chances. He’s a hard worker who really benefitted Spain’s trio of Williams, Yamal and Olmo and I hope he can make Leao, Pulisic and Chukwueze look just as good!

    1. If you look at this move closely, it’s the sensible thing to do, we get a striker who is used to winning, and he is in his peak, and he is not to expensive, then we have Jovic who will definitely pick up from, and we then get Abraham, who is a good striker, who is yet to explode, Zirkzee was a good bet, but come to think of it, he has not yet exploded, and the amount Bologna were asking for was high, but what was obscene was the commission his agent was asking for, people like him should not be encouraged, it was a rip off.

      1. Not only all of that, but we don’t get a 23 striker who might “block” Camarda, or who we would get stuck with, if Camarda gets promoted anyway, and has not done enough to justify a sale price that would cover the original expense.

        1. I don’t see anything special in this Camarda guy
          Very overhyped
Ridiculous for a top club to wait for some 16 year old to grow up

  4. Sustainable and average player, perfect match for that management. I think now with Fonseca and Morata we can start thinking about the fourth star Zlatan!

    1. Nope we will get second star scudetto . He is not great striker and far below haaland but his work rate and adaptation are good , he is working with many coach

  5. I remember people were laughing when juve had signed him and he was great there.

Was he my first choice? No, but he his off the ball movement, his build up play and his heading is great. He will work hard and get the team more involved and the biggest attribute is that he has experience at winning major trophies. Something we need in this team.

  6. Morata is a better choice than Lukaku. Lukaku lately blanks out in key matches and entirely disappears. Morata was the right choice out of the bunch. He only had one goal for Spain, but his work rate opened up play for many others on the team.

  7. If his price tag 20-25 mil we won’t get even near him. That’s the truth. Not saying that he’s bad and all, simply because he fits the bill and the management really don’t have certain criterias for our striker need.

  8.
