Igli Tare has taken a big step forward in the race to become AC Milan’s new sporting director, according to a report.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the contacts between Tare and the Milan management – which never stopped – have resumed in these hours. There was a phone call and there is a commitment to speak soon.
Will it be to close everything? Yes, it is possible. There is no signature yet but, if everything goes as planned, they will shake hands and begin the construction of the project for 2025-26 and beyond. There is no time to waste.
Tare favourite again
Tare has always been on the table as an option for CEO Giorgio Furlani, and even before that for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gerry Cardinale. The former Lazio sporting director met Ibrahimovic and Cardinale in February, Furlani on April 15. Evidently, everyone liked what he had to say.
Since then, there has been a long period of reflection in which Tare has never left the shortlist of top candidates for such a delicate role. There has been no shortage of competition, though, with Fabio Paratici close to arriving at the beginning of April before legal issues halted everything.
Tare, even at that time, was the natural alternative, the only other sporting director with great experience in Italy – 15 years under Claudio Lotito at Lazio – and accustomed to building teams for the Champions League and Europa League.
Milan will not play in Europe next year but it is clear, that is the only dimension to which it belongs and the mission will be to instantly get back there.
