Hiring Ruben Amorim meant committing to a new style of football at Milan and whilst baby steps have been made, they are not yet an Amorim side. Of course, things can change quickly. However, there is still a distance to go.
Positive signs
This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport looked at some of the good being done by the Rossoneri this summer, and it starts with the bravery displayed by the team so far. Indeed, they went behind in both games, yet fought back to draw both.
Their pressing has improved substantially, too. In Glasgow, it was pretty poor, but there was a marked improvement against Inter on Wednesday. Unfortunately, it did not stay consistent through the game, but it was a much better sign.
Finally, they are becoming a more vertical team, focused on scoring goals, rather than biding their time in the build-up. This will certainly benefit several players in the first team.
Work to do still
It is undeniable that there is still work to be done, though, and Ruben Amorim has stressed as much in his recent press conferences. Indeed, against Inter, they were shaky when playing out from the back. This is nothing new and it was seen on several occasions last season and beyond.
Then, there are clear issues in consistency within a game, let alone from game to game. It feels like you see several versions of the same team in 90 minutes and they were perhaps lucky to grab a saving goal against Inter.
Finally, the team are still too slow. Whether it’s finding the right pass in build up or actually playing it, they need to become a faster and more intelligent team in this respect. Of course, all three issues can be solved with time, though.
