Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes how the brace he scored against Australia in the opening match of the World Cup is just the latest in a series of significant moments that Giroud has ticked off in 2022.
With his goals against the Socceroos, the 36-year-old set some important records in the history of his national team. First of all, he joined Thierry Henry on 51 goals, at the top of their all-time top goalscorers list.
Olivier also became the oldest ever World Cup goalscorer for France, surpassing Zinedine Zidane and his goal in the 2006 final against Italy, having scored at the age of 36 years and 53 days.
Given Karim Benzema is out of the tournament it seems that the doors have opened for Giroud to become the outright top scorer and it would be another milestone after what has already been an incredible year.
The former Chelsea and Arsenal man scored big goals to win Milan the Scudetto such as the brace that beat Inter, the winner against Napoli in Naples, the equaliser versus Lazio that ended up being three points, and the brace against Sassuolo to seal the title win.
Giroud arrived in the dressing room as Ibrahimovic’s assistant but gradually took centre stage with his great charisma and knack for being decisive. He has 4 goals in 6 games in the Champions League, scored in the derby this season and netted a last-minute winner against Spezia.
Upon his return from Qatar in January, Giroud will meet with Milan and negotiations will begin over a renewal which – given the conditions and the good relationship between the parties involved – seems to be just a formality
