Ambrosini reveals what Maldini told him about Kalulu and a potential centre-back signing

Former AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has revealed what Paolo Maldini told him in a discussion about Pierre Kalulu and the team’s centre-back options.

Kalulu has been somewhat thrust into the limelight in 2022 as he has stepped up brilliantly in the role of centre-back, having been called upon initially when the defence was in a state of crisis due to injuries and other selection problems.

Despite being just 21 years of age and despite having joined from Lyon having not made a senior appearance for them, the Frenchman continues to show that he is a player beyond his years and he is even making some doubt whether a big investment is a needed in that position amid the constant links with a move for Sven Botman of Lille, who would likely demand a €30m+ fee.

Ambrosini spoke on Sunday Night Square on DAZN and mentioned a discussion that he had with Maldini off camera about how the Rossoneri’s options look.

“We must give credit to Paolo [Maldini]. Speaking with him, even off camera, he tells me: ‘Kalulu has become a serious player. So why do I have to spend money to get one?,” he began (via MilanZone).

“‘Either I sign one that is a top player or I stay with the ones I have because they give me guarantees’. Are this Milan like that of Zaccheroni? This team here is stronger than we were in relation to the other teams that were there.”
