Bennacer explains his key responsibilities at Milan: “I feel like a leader”

Ismael Bennacer has been a key player for AC Milan in the last few years and his recent absence has certainly been felt. Now closing in on a return, the midfielder has shared his thoughts on his responsibilities at the club.

Bennacer underwent knee surgery back in May and has since been working hard on his recovery. In recent days, he took part in some of the group training and that was a huge signal. The estimate is that he will be back in mid-December.

In an interview with Instant Foot, which you can read in full here, Bennacer spoke about his responsibilities at Milan. He has been at the club for over four years, making the journey from a tough situation to the Scudetto in 2021-22, among other things.

“Leao? We arrived together that summer. We talk a lot. Rafa is incredible on the pitch, but off the pitch he is more relaxed. We always talk: when he needs something, I’m there. He’s like a younger brother, I give him advice. I’m like that with everyone because the team comes first. He and I were there when the reconstruction of the team began.

“I feel like a leader, but that doesn’t mean I feel stronger than others. I have more responsibilities: you have to set an example when you wear the Milan shirt. Today I try to make the new arrivals feel at ease. I give them my phone number, I tell them not to hesitate to call me if they have problems. It’s normal to be shy when you arrive in a new dressing room: it also happened to Saelemaekers,” he stated.

The midfielder’s return will almost be like a signing for Milan, who have relied on Yacine Adli and Rade Krunic in the No.6 role so far. There’s no doubt that he’s the best midfielder in the squad and the comeback is highly anticipated.
