CM: Mourinho sees red again as peculiar trend of avoiding San Siro continues

José Mourinho will not be present at San Siro for the game between AC Milan and his side Roma on Sunday night, and it continues a very familiar theme.

Mourinho was shown a red card at the Stadio Olimpico last night during Roma’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta, which is his seventh sending off in his two and a half years with the Giallorossi.

As Calciomercato.com outline, Mourinho also has a habit for getting a red just before a trip to San Siro beckons. The Portuguese coach has already missed three away matches at the Meazza due to disqualification, and this will mark a fourth.

He has missed one out of two games against the Rossoneri and two out of four against the Nerazzurri. San Siro is obviously a place he feels a connection with given he won the treble with Inter, which makes it an even more peculiar trend.

Mourinho’s first San Siro return was on 8 February 2022 for the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, which his lost 2-0 . The second was on 23 April of the same year, another defeat for Roma with Inter beating them 3-1.

The Portuguese was not present due to disqualification on 1 October 2022 when his side actually won thanks to goals from Paulo Dybala and Chris Smalling, nor was he there on 29 October last year when Inter won on Romelu Lukaku’s return.

Mourinho was on the sidelines on 6 January 2022 when his team lost 3-1 to the Rossoneri, but he was not on 8 January 8 2023 when the Giallorossi were two goals behind but came back to earn a 2-2 draw late on.
