There is a lot that can be said about Milan this season, and a lot of it is good. In fact, finding the negatives is a much more difficult task than it has been in recent years. Which is only a good thing, all things considered.
The Rossoneri are a much more enjoyable team to follow in their current state. After all, when there is a solid idea that players and fans buy into, that warm feeling returns when your team is going through a good time.
Throughout this season, that warmth of success has only been getting hotter, and this weekend, it may have reached a boiling point.
Derby day
A win against Inter will always be remembered fondly, and when there are key performances from your key players, the happiness increases. Of course, derby drama – when you get the right side of it – is not always bad.
However, to win and performances to be solid is the best outcome for all parties involved with the Rossoneri, and this was the case.
Mike Maignan was fantastic, making countless big saves, and then there was the penalty save, too. A lot of focus has been on the fact that he could be leaving, and while it hurts, there is a part of you that is left happy that he could deliver some final big moments to write himself into legend, perhaps.
Then, there was the goal from Christian Pulisic. Poacher-like, a lot of talk has gone into the need for a striker, and whilst the American may not be what Massimiliano Allegri wanted, he is being what he needed: a goalscorer.
Elsewhere, Luka Modric, Rafael Leao, Adrien Rabiot, the defensive unit, and the team generally were all good.
Scudetto on?
Looking forward, then, it means the Rossoneri are on 17 points from seven games against last season’s top teams. They have only dropped points in draws against Atalanta and Juventus from that group.
In those games, there are strong cases that the Diavolo should have won, and on another day, they probably do. So, it is impossible to avoid talk of the Scudetto. No one at the club will be thinking too far ahead just yet, but this weekend’s win was a bigger step towards the title than what may have been imagined.
