If appointed as the new technical director of AC Milan, then Ralf Rangnick could turn to a former Genoa sporting director amid an ‘excellent relationship’ between the two.

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Rangnick is the leading candidate to become Milan’s new technical director. Considering how the German works, it would be a role with a lot of power, deciding all of the directors below him.

While Rangnick and Milan haven’t reached a full agreement just yet, the Austria coach has surely thought about how the Rossoneri could look if he were to accept the gig. In that sense, just like he wants Oliver Glasner or Matthias Jaissle for the head coach role, he has other names in mind.

Spors is a candidate

As stated by Gianluca Di Marzio on Sky Italia (via MilanNews), Milan would need to grant Rangnick a lot of power for him to accept the gig. That would entail picking the sporting director, as said above, and there seems to be a candidate already.

“Rangnick has an excellent relationship with Johannes Spors, who was Genoa’s sporting director. If Milan were to accept Rangnick’s terms, they could rely on figures who already know Italian football like Spors. But I’m talking about possible scenarios; it will depend a bit on Milan’s willingness,” he stated. ‘

Spors is currently at Southampton, but he spent about two and a half years at Genoa between 2022 and 2025, so he knows Serie A well. This would arguably be a benefit as the changes Rangnick is expected to make would be quite radical, perhaps in need of an Italian touch.
