Fichajes: Milan star on Real Madrid’s list amid knee concerns over key man

Mike Maignan has entered Real Madrid’s list of potential summer targets as they continue to have doubts over how much Thibaut Courtois can contribute.

After the confirmation of a new injury for Courtois – which will leave him out of actions for two months – Fichajes reports that Real Madrid are evaluating their options for who should be the starting goalkeeper next season.

Courtois was in the process of recovering from a cruciate ligament injury and has not played since August last year, but he has been again affected by a tear of the internal meniscus in his right knee, thus suffering a setback.

With uncertainty surrounding Courtois’ availability for the start of next season, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is considering three options to reinforce that particular role.

One of them is Diogo Costa, a 24-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper who is currently at Porto. He is a starter for the Portugal national team and has been a target for Los Blancos for some time.

Another option is Maignan, the 28-year-old French goalkeeper who currently plays for Milan. Considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, his possible exit could depend on the financial needs of Milan, who ‘seek to obtain income to invest in new signings’ as per the source.

The third option is to stick with Andriy Lunin, who has occupied the Real Madrid goal this season due to Courtois’ injuries and has surpassed Kepa in the hierarchy. Although Lunin has been impressive and is only 25, he still raises some doubts in important moments.

The LaLiga club will wait to see his performances in the remainder of the Champions League before making a final decision, considering that it would not require an additional investment if he were to show himself to be up to the task.

As a reminder, Maignan did not train with the rest of the France squad on Tuesday as they continue to prepare for the friendlies over the break, with Didier Deschamps stating he has a ‘little concern’.
