AC Milan have not been able to find an agreement with Mike Maignan over a contract renewal and that has alerted several top European clubs, a report claims.
Footmercato report that Maignan – who was signed from Lille in the summer of 2021 for €16m – has been in discussion with Milan over extending his contract for over six months and yet no deal has been struck.
With 17 clean sheets and only 19 goals conceded in 32 Serie A matches, he was one of the great architects of Milan’s Scudetto win in 2021-22, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and also France’s No.1.
The report suggests that the multiple issues engulfing Milan – such as the uncertain future of Stefano Pioli, the regular injury crisis, having a squad not built to play in several competitions, the exit of Paolo Maldini and a potential early elimination from Europe – are not exactly helping negotiations.
Although he currently has a contract until June 2026, Maignan – who feels very happy at the club – asked to see his salary significantly increased, so that it correlates with that of a world-class goalkeeper starting in the one of the biggest teams in football. We are currently far from that, even if discussions continue.
One thing is certain: the ex-Lille man does not want to hear about leaving for the moment and for Milan it is currently out of the question to sell him in the coming months. Despite this, there are clubs lining up.
Manchester United are admirers (Erik ten Hag really likes his profile and is not convinced by André Onana), Chelsea are keen (as was already the case last summer), Bayern Munich are looking for a successor to Manuel Neuer and his former club PSG are monitoring things too.
These four clubs are waiting quietly and carefully following the negotiations between the 28-year-old goalkeeper – whose value is estimated at more than €70m – and AC Milan.
