AC Milan helped fund Chelsea’s big-money signing of Romelu Lukaku in a move that strengthened the Rossoneri and weakened rivals Inter.
According to FourFourTwo, Lukaku ended up costing Chelsea £97.5m when he joined from Inter last week with Thomas Tuchel finally getting the out-and-out centre-forward he has been chasing all summer. Of course Covid has had a big impact on the amount teams can spend, but the Blues managed to get a deal over the line.
The report adds that the signing of the Belgian also funded by sales as well as Abramovich’s deep pockets, and this is where Milan come into the equation. Lukaku’s price was less than Chelsea recouped for Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Tammy Abraham and Kurt Zouma – who they sold for a combined £100m.
It is well-known now that Milan paid €28m to sign Tomori permanently, and that helped pave the way for Chelsea to accrue a large chunk of liquidity and eventually sign Lukaku. So, as the Rossoneri got stronger they were also simultaneously helping Chelsea to weaken a potential title rival in Inter. Roma’s €40m deal for Tammy Abraham (via The Athletic) was also a big part of it.
