Di Marzio: The full background on Kessie renewal negotiations and why a happy ending is unlikely

Franck Kessie continues to ask for a huge salary which means that his days with AC Milan seem numbered at the moment, according to a report.

Gianluca Di Marzio recalls how Theo Hernández’s contractual extension has been officially confirmed after the likes of Matteo Gabbia, Davide Calabria, Alexis Saelemaekers and Simon Kjaer were earlier in the year with Leao and Bennacer to follow, but the Kessie case remains unsolved.

The Ivorian midfielder’s contract expires in June and an agreement never came despite promises to extend and public declarations of love for the club. Di Marzio rewinds to last summer when Milan had just achieved Champions League qualification and enthusiasm was high.

Maldini and Massara wasted no time and started the first contacts to extend Kessie’s contract and the player sent a clear signal during an interview at the Olympic Games that reassured the Rossoneri fans: “I have no intention of leave Milan, I want to stay forever. The fans must rest assured.”

Once the Olympics were over, the former Atalanta man and the Rossoneri management met to define the renewal but after other enquiries and discussions that never really got anywhere, cracks in the relationship began to show.

Milan and Kessié were unable to find an agreement on figures with an offer between €6-6.5m on the player while the player’s entourage were asking for €9m, which they still are now and it remains the major sticking point.

Kessie continues to ask for €9m+ while Milan will not move so the risk of losing him on a free transfer – as happened with Donnarumma and Calhanoglu – is becoming more and more concrete. The story between Kessié and Milan seems to have come to an end, and not a happy one.
