From day one of preseason Allegri made a couple of things clear: 1) He wanted to use a 3-5-2 formation, and 2) He wanted Leao and Pulisic to be the duo to spearhead what he hoped would be a lethal counter-attacking team.
The reality though has been very different, as the American and the Portuguese have only played together for 595 minutes in the league and have scored a paltry two goals. Both have been injured at different times, and are not yet at their peak, neither in condition nor chemistry.
While it has since been resolved with an apology and a handshake, Sunday night’s game against Lazio was emblematic. Pulisic failed to release Leao in behind with a through ball twice, leading to an angry outburst from the latter on the sidelines and in the dressing room.
