Simone Sozza had his work cut out for him in the derby between AC Milan and Inter last night. There were a few questionable incidents, but the referee managed to get the major decisions right.
Inter took the lead early in the game after a questionable situation, as both Malick Thiaw and Theo Hernandez were brought down in the build-up to the goal. There was really no controversy for the rest of the goals, though.
Today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (see photo below) took stock of the referee’s performance. On the first goal, it was right to let the play go on for the contact on Thiaw but Dumfries’ tackle on Hernandez is more questionable. It wasn’t a clear and obvious error, thus preventing VAR from stepping him but Sozza certainly could have blown his while there, instead of deeming it a far shoulder-to-shoulder challenge.
Apart from that, the referee got the decisions right as it was also a penalty for Inter due to Hernandez’s intervention. The newspaper concluded by giving Sozza a 6/10 for the performance which is a pass.
