GdS: Why Pellegrino was called up by Argentina despite zero minutes with Milan

AC Milan signed Marco Pellegrino from Platense in the summer and the youngster is yet to make an appearance for the club. In spite of this, he was called up by Argentina for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

As a result of Matteo Gabbia’s loan move to Villarreal, Milan went looking for a centre-back on the market and eventually signed the talented Pellegrino from Platense. The transfer fee was around €3-5m, which has been described as a bargain.

The 21-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the Rossoneri, but there’s a good reason for his Argentina call-up. As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, Argentina want to lock him down as he’s also eligible to play for Italy.

Then, of course, Pellegrino also impressed during his time at Platense and the national team staff have been keeping tabs on him for a long time. It remains to be seen when he will make his first appearance for Milan, but it’s probably not far away.
