CM: Leao hits the ground running in preseason – Milan’s renewal plan as Chelsea show interest

Rafael Leao was one of the key driving forces as AC Milan ended their Scudetto drought but now the club must ensure that he is around for many years to come.

Calciomercato.com write how Leao was among the positive notes in the 5-0 victory against Wolfsberger to end the preseason retreat in Austria as he scored the first goal and showed himself to be in excellent condition for the 45 minutes he played, along with Theo Hernandez on the left.

Some interest has arrived from abroad in Leao – especially from Chelsea – and in the meantime talks over the renewal of the winger have not yet taken off and do not seem destined to do so in the short term.

Leao has yet to close the legal issue with Sporting CP regarding the compensation payment from terminating his contract, which is one factor, but also Milan have other priorities right now with Maldini and Massara focused on the De Ketelaere front.

His contract extension will still be addressed again in the coming weeks, perhaps with the market closed, because even RedBird and Gerry Cardinale – who will lead Milan into a new era – know that Leao is a precious resource.
