Member of Giroud’s entourage clarifies situation after renewal and reveals the ‘promise’ Chelsea made

A member of Olivier Giroud’s entourage has confirmed that Chelsea will still let the striker leave this summer despite his renewal.

A number of sources have reported over the last week that Giroud is close to Milan, with talk that he had agreed a deal in principle and that he is shopping for a new home in Italy, but the developments this afternoon have left many scratching their heads.

Chelsea’s official website confirmed the Frenchman has now extended his contract until 2022. The 34-year-old’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this campaign but the extension means his three-and-a-half-year stay in west London continues for another year.

Or maybe not. Calciomercato.com have spoken to a member of Giroud’s entourage to clarify what the state of play is regarding the 34-year-old, confirming that he could still depart as long as it is an offer from a foreign club, implying the clause has been triggered to prevent a domestic move.

“Chelsea exercised a unilateral option, but with the promise he’d be released if there was an offer from a foreign club,” he said.
