CM: Milan’s attacking problems clear to see – supporting cast not up to the task

AC Milan have now failed to score in three of their last four games across all competitions and it has become very apparent that the attack has a lot of shortfalls.

Calciomercato.com report how the 3-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg was a blow, but there are still five games in which to try to score the highest number of points and the hope that Simone Inzaghi’s team will run into some false missteps along the way.

However, there is enough to suggest that Milan should be worried about the upcoming fixtures and more specifically their ability to outscore opponents, or even score at all. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has 8 goals in the league this season but has vanished off radar in 2022, while Rafael Leao has 9 goals and Olivier Giroud has 8, but both are working overtime and are feeling the weight of pressure.

That is because the supporting cast have simply not been good enough. Brahim Diaz’s form has collapsed post-Covid as he has not added to his tally of 3 league goals since last September, while Alexis Saelemaekers has scored just once and Junior Messias has 5 goals.

The Rossoneri shot a total of 19 times towards Handanovic’s goal on Tuesday night, and had a 0 on the scoreboard to show for it. In the three-point era (since 1994-95) only one team has taken home the Scudetto without having at least one double-digit forward and it was Lippi’s Juventus in 1996-97 season when Vieri, Padovano and Del Piero had 8, but the players around them made up for it.
