Reports: Milan beat Roma and Atalanta to signing of Ireland U17 captain

AC Milan are on the verge of signing Cathal Heffernan from Cork City after a number of trials with different clubs around Italy and Europe, a report claims.

According to The Sun in Ireland, the Irish 17 captain is on his way to Milan and is in fact in talks with the Rossoneri over joining, having previously had trials at Atalanta and Roma and more recently with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 17-year-old made his League of Ireland debut against Galway United in October and is ‘highly rated’ by the club, but he seems set to follow the path that other Irish teenagers have being taking recently.

If he were to complete the move to Milan, he would become the third in the past six months to make the move to Italy after his Irish U17 team-mate Kevin Zefi joined Inter from Shamrock Rovers while 18-year-old James Abankwah moved from St Patrick’s Athletic to Udinese.

Calciomercato.com reports that Heffernan will join the youth sector, having recently trained with Atalanta and Roma, but he chose the Rossoneri.
