GdS: Milan to invest €50m+ on defender and midfielder – what that means for the attack

AC Milan are expected to invest in a new centre-back and a midfielder this summer but there are some question marks about the attack.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are getting ready to make large investments for the central defender role with Sven Botman the number one target, and also on a midfielder who will be the heir to Franck Kessie and Renato Sanches is the preferred target.

Between €50-55m is estimated, also for this reason Maldini and Massara did not insist on the renewal of Romagnoli and did not panic when Kessie chose Barcelona.

Then, other investments will have to be made and they must be targeted well. Ante Rebic is not untouchable, Rafael Leao’s renewal is only a matter of time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s final decision is awaited and Divock Origi seems to be close to arriving, and after that decisions must be made.

Maldini and Massara must decide whether to get another centre-forward or to shift the investment to getting a new right winger, because Saelemaekers and Messias have not convinced. Domenico Berardi is a player that Stefano Pioli likes, but a lot depends on whether everyone agrees on the €25m plus bonuses it would take to sign the 28-year-old.

The Rossoneri usually invest in younger players with some exceptions like Ibrahimovic and Giroud, so Marco Asensio fits the bill in this sense given he is 26 and has a contract expiring in just over a year with Real Madrid. It will be necessary to understand what his salary demands are, and other options will be considered.

Milan may also ask Crotone for a discount on the €5.5m option to buy on Messias while hoping for some decisive goals in the battle for the Scudetto, but Monza are watching on in case he doesn’t end up joining.
