Tuttosport: Milan’s big risk in the January window could be critically exposed

AC Milan were prudent in the January transfer window, choosing not to sign anyone that the management are not convinced by, but in doing so they have taken a big risk.

That is according to Tuttosport (via MilanNews) who report that there is great disappointment among the Milan fans regarding Milan’s January transfer market which in fact brought only one player: 18-year-old striker Marko Lazetic.

The fact that Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara failed to sign a defender despite the recent emergency at centre-back and the season-ending injury sustained by Simon Kjaer is a major cause of frustration, because from now to the end of the season Stefano Pioli will have only four central defenders.

Not only that, but one of them – Pierre Kalulu – has been adapted from his preferred role of right-back. He is expected to start the derby because the chances of seeing Fikayo Tomori recover have decreased, and that in itself is a worry because it shows Matteo Gabbia – a natural centre-back – is not trusted over the younger Kalulu.

Milan tried everything to convince Lille to sell Sven Botman in January, but after their refusal they did not try to get creative. Now, the hope is that there are no other injuries in that department, otherwise the magnitude of the numerical risk that the directors have taken will become exposed.
