For most of the season, it seemed Milan were certainties for the Champions League. Indeed, the Rossoneri were title contenders and then a somewhat solid top four team.
However, Massimiliano Allegri’s side began to slip and once they did, there was no stopping them.
It’s a prime example of what cannot happen again this season. Consistency is a must and that is why there was such a big overhaul across the board this summer.
Now, Gerry Cardinale hopes that there will be an immediate pay-off, perhaps in the Europa League.
Aiming for a trophy
As written in this morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, as seen below, there are no excuses for Juventus or Milan; they will both be expected to win the Europa League this season.
Whatever happens, a return to the Champions League is a must, however it comes. The ambition of winning a trophy, too, is great, though.
If Ruben Amorim were to deliver a clear statement of his – and his team’s – quality, it would be welcomed by fans, certainly.
In the Champions League, they’d be ‘supporting players’. However, they enter the Europa League as key players who can have confidence of lifting the trophy.
