CorSport: Milan’s stance on Leao reverses – work underway on renewal amid PSG interest

AC Milan considered selling Rafael Leao last summer but now their plans for him have completely changed thanks to his incredible performances, a report claims.

After scoring the winner against Fiorentina at San Siro earlier in the month, Leao was in devastating form at the Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday night as he twice set up Sandro Tonali who had the simple job of slotting into an empty net to overcome a 1-0 deficit and take a giant leap towards the Scudetto.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) report this morning, Leao was included in the list of possible sales last summer but no offers arrived on the desk of the management that made them consider letting go of a player that they knew had tremendous potential and talent.

As head coach Stefano Pioli also explained in several interviews, the Portuguese forward reported for preseason training with a different mentality and attitude, which then transformed into more consistent and explosive performances.

Milan are working to extend Leao’s contract until 2026 or 2027 even though he has no shortage of admirers, especially PSG. Currently the ex-Lille man earns €1.5m net per season but to convince him to renew a contract worth at least €5m-a-year could be needed.

The good news is that the player’s will is to stay at the club and this could certainly favour the success of the negotiation, but in the meantime agent Jorge Mendes knows clubs are gathering.
