GdS: Milan look at three new stadium sites to build without Inter as delays persist

AC Milan are now in a hurry to get their new stadium project up and running with three hypotheses being considered that do not involve Inter, a report claims.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes how are at the end of February 2023 and a decision has not yet been made that can definitively launch the new stadium project presented over three years by Milan and Inter.

After the public debate process the Council made certain requests on capacity and redevelopment which were accepted by the clubs but continuous obstacles get in the way, the latest one being a potential restriction on the current San Siro.

Milan are now considering building their own stadium away from San Siro and without Inter because there is no room for sentimentality in football. Investments made in the last 10 to 15 years in stadiums in the Premier League have shown how much difference it makes to own a stadium, especially in terms of income.

To return to competing at a high level consistently the Rossoneri need a new state of the art home. Milan are a club that have embarked on the path of financial recovery for several years and now they are in much better health, while Gerry Cardinale and RedBird are able to support an investment such as the new stadium.

The Nerazzurri on the other hand are not in good health as the Oaktree fund – which is basically for Steven Zhang what Elliott was for Yonghong Li at the time – waiting for the loan to be repaid.

Milan think it could be better to proceed without a club that has such an uncertain economic future, and three sites are being lined up: the former Falck steelworks site at Sesto San Giovanni, a move to San Donato or ‘La Maura’ hippodrome which is around 1.5km from San Siro, owned by the FCMA and currently used for horse training.

Obviously each site would require starting the plans from scratch but this time on private land and with Cardinale – an expert in sports facilities – determined to achieve his goal.
