MN: A potential €33m up for grabs – the financial incentive for a deep cup run

AC Milan open 2024 with a game against Cagliari in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia and it marks another competition that the team must look to win.

It has been two decades since Milan last lifted the Italian cup, and last January brought a nightmarish result for Stefano Pioli’s side as they lost 1-0 to Torino after extra-time at the same stage despite the fact they had a man advantage for most of the game.

Therefore, as MilanNews write, Milan must look very seriously at the Coppa Italia given they have not won this competition for 21 years – an eternity even compared to their rivals – while the elimination of Inter and Napoli on paper means a simpler path towards the final.

Furthermore, with first place in the league far away and the Europa League difficult to win, the cup is a potential trophy for the Diavolo to lift  which is absolutely within reach. In addition to the sporting aspect, there is of course the financial too.

This year the earnings are greater: whoever reaches the end and lifts the trophy will receive €10m while just reaching the final allows access to the Supercoppa Italia which this year debuts with a four-team format and offers a rich prize pool of €23m.
