Papin urges Leao to reject Chelsea move and sign renewal with Milan

Rafael Leao was linked with a move to Chelsea this past summer and it’s believed that the Stamford Bridge will try again in January. Former Milan man Jean-Pierre Papin has urged the winger to remain at AC Milan.

Negotiations are underway between Milan and Jorge Mendes over the renewal but an agreement hasn’t been reached yet. It’s a complicated situation and nothing can be ruled out at this point, even if Leao is happy to stay at the club.

Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan.it), the French legend and former Milan man Papin was asked about the future of Leao. He urged the latter to listen to Paolo Maldini’s words and remain at the club.

“I agree with Paolo. Leao should look at the Chelsea squad and asks himself ‘How much space would I find as a starter?’. At Milan, he’s untouchable, he knows how to express himself and knows his teammates perfectly. Staying and growing with the Rossoneri is the best choice,” he stated.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the saga will be but it’s clear that the next few months will be decisive. The current deal will expire in 2024 and in case an agreement can’t be reached, Milan will have to monetise.
