CM: Protests to ‘Pioli on fire’, Rangnick to renewal – Pioli’s journey with Milan continues

The news became official today that Stefano Pioli has signed a new contract with AC Milan that will run until 2025, adding another important chapter to his story at the club.

Calciomercato.com recall how two years ago Milan were at a crossroads. Pioli had taken over from Marco Giampaolo amid scepticism and even social media protests from fans but the results saw him gain momentum, while talks were held with Ralf Rangnick about being the man to lead the Rossoneri’s latest ‘revolution’.

Pioli overcame a dreadful start to the season and took Milan to sixth place in the lockdown-affected season due to Covid. When they retook the field in July Milan went on a run where they claimed 30 points out of 36, and Rangnick’s shadow was chased away by the ‘Pioli is on fire’ chants.

Pioli earned his trust on the pitch, in silence, without raising his voice. He knew that Ragnick was very close to joining but he did not let it affect him as he studied, experimented and found the right formula.

In 2020-21 he won the first four games of the season – including the derby – something that hadn’t happened since 1995-96 with Fabio Capello. The Rossoneri closed the season in second place and a record of away victories (16).

A return to the Champions League in 2021-22 was accompanied by a more serious Scudetto fight. In mid-February they went above Inter by winning against Sampdoria, with six wins in the last six games sealing a first league title in 11 years.

Today’s renewal is the reward for a lot of hard work, as well as a demonstration of the harmony between all levels of the club from ownership to management and coaching staff. What will Rangnick be thinking now?
